Turkey continued their strong start to the Islamic Solidarity Games on Saturday as Ege Baser grabbed the first swimming gold medal in the men's 200m backstroke.
The 19-year-old produced a superb late surge at the Baku Aquatics Centre to take victory in 2:01.72 ahead of Algeria's Adbellah Ardjoune and Ricky Anggawidjaja of Indonesia, who took silver and bronze respectively.
Defending champion Boris Kirillov of Azerbaijan thrilled the home crowd as he led at the halfway stage, but his challenge ultimately faded and he had to settle for fourth place.
There are six more swimming finals to come on Saturday evening, including the women's 800m freestyle and the men's 4x100m freestyle relay.
